Pope Francis I was elected at the fourth vote of the Papal conclave on March 13, 2013 after Pope Benedict XVI resigned at the end of February. His inauguration Mass was in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican on Tuesday March 19th.
The beginning of Pope Francis’ papacy has provoked an outpouring of memes passed through social media. If you do not know what a meme is, the memes speak for themselves. A meme is anything that is spread or shared on the internet.

When Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina received enough votes to become pope, white smoke came over St. Peters square for the faithful to see. Thousands of people waited outside despite a rainy day. The photo shows Pope Francis as he walked out and greeted the crowd on March 13th, 2013, around fifty minutes after the white smoke came up. Who would even think the Madagascar penguins would stand next to a Pope? Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, a BVM sister who works at Loyola University Chicago, prayed for an ethnic Pope. She said “the Holy Spirit will guide the conclave." Her prayers were answered with the Argentine cardinal chosen.
